Edible High Streets
With the help of a Bury Council Community Fund grant, Incredible Edible launched this project to brighten up Bury New Road and Whitaker Lane with planters or hanging baskets full of mainly edible plants. In the first phase of this, small shop front planters have appeared outside many of the shops along Bury New Road, and more are in the pipeline. During next week we will put up hanging baskets outside Kelly’s hairdressers at the junction of Whitaker Lane and Bury Old Road. Our planters will also feature prominently on the ‘Local in Prestwich (LIP)’ carnival float at Prestwich carnival on June 17th.
We are working on the second phase: placing larger fixed planters in a number of prominent locations. We have permission for a site outside Heaton Park Metrolink station, on Bury New Road and Church Lane and outside the Phoenix Centre in St Mary’s Park and the planters are in production. We are still waiting for permission for some other locations.
We always saw the grant as a launching pad for a longer term project. We have been able to make it go further by using donated materials for the smaller planters and participating shops have paid half the remaining cost of making the smaller planters. TGM and Metrolink have agreed to fund the Heaton Park station planter. Offers of sponsorship from other bodies would be welcome. Without some further sponsorship, our existing commitments will use the remainder of the grant during the next two months and we will be looking for new sources of funding to extend the work.
