Veg in the Park
We’re asking people to Veg in the Park with us at St Mary’s on Sunday 10th July, from 11-12.30. Joan will be there to give advice on growing vegetables and we’ll have information about the veg beds and all our other IEPAD sites.
Our photos show how amazingly well the St Mary’s Park veg beds have come on over a matter of weeks. We’ve been picking the mange tout especially as they do better that way. If you’re passing do help yourself to a few if they look ready - the pods of this variety are meant to be yellow.
Someone asked how we managed to keep the beds slug-free - I wish we could share a wonderful slug cure with you but the truth is that they simply don’t seem to have discovered us yet. Another potential threat came a couple of weeks ago at Prestwich Carnival when we found the dodgems scarily close to our veg beds - well under a metre away at one point - and some of us feared the worst. But when the fair had left we found the beds all thriving as ever, completely undamaged. So thanks to the fairground owners and all the people who took care to walk round the beds despite the crowds.
