Silver Medal!

Monty Don with Joan in her Care Home Garden
Well done Joan! The judges at the RHS Tatton Flower Show have awarded Joan's Care Home Garden a well-deserved silver medal. A garden like this would mean no one who loved gardening would have to hang up their gardening gloves just because they were in a wheelchair or couldn't work outside any more.

Advice from Joan 2
If you’re planning to go to the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park next week, look out for the Care Home Garden designed by Joan of Garden Design Manchester. Joan has been volunteering with IEPAD since we started and she leads the group at our St Mary’s Park site. We’ve been lucky to have someone so knowledgeable and encouraging to keep us on the right track!

You can read about how Joan has gone about creating the garden in the blog on her website.

IEPAD are really delighted to be sponsors of the Care Home Garden and we’re keeping our fingers crossed for Joan. It would be great if all care homes could have a garden like this!

Planting peas 2

We’ve switched to working on alternate Saturday mornings in St Mary’s Park instead of Sundays for now. Last week was our first one, and what a freezing cold day it was! Especially as we’d all been deceived by the sunshine earlier on, so weren’t exactly in our warmest winter woollies. Thank goodness we didn’t have too much to do, so just for once we finished a bit early.

We’re all growing plants from seed at home but we only plant them out when they get to a decent size in the hopes of avoiding slug damage. So far we’ve planted potatoes and some of the home-grown peas and mange tout.

Joan leads the group at this particular site and is always a mine of useful information about growing edibles. She’s also a garden designer when she’s not doing voluntary work with IEPAD and this year she’ll be exhibiting a garden at the RHS Tatton Flower Show. Exciting stuff!  IEPAD held a pub quiz earlier in the year to raise sponsorship money for her and we’re looking forward to seeing the finished result in July. In the meantime there’s more about it on Joan's blog.
